movies and tv aren't made for people like me anymore

Ahoy there!

So, when I say "people like me", I mean people who actually watch movies and TV Shows. While the title is an exaggeration, it's still relatively true.

Movies and shows these days are mostly made for people who can't sit through them, constantly checking their phones or having them up on a second monitor. This now results in two things, shows and movies with uninteresting set design and cinematography, and shows and movies having to reiterate things multiple times because they are designed for people not paying attention.

I'll give you an example, I was watching this show Ginny and Georgia with my wife, and I noticed something. The sets were REALLY simplistic, the sets include: the inside of a fucking house. This made up I would say 90% of the sets in this show, with like 3 exceptions I can recall. Being a neighborhood, a school, and a courtroom (really breaking the bank here guys).

The plots aren't really that complex and you can kinda figure out how the events of the show will play out.

The shows have this incessant need to reiterate what the plot is. Going back to Ginny and Georgia, episodes would reiterate several times in a single episode (across multiple episodes) how Ginny was facing jail time.

It'd be like if watching Breaking Bad and every 15 minutes Walter brings up he has to cook meth for his cancer treatment.

I notice this more with live-action streaming shows, I know they're low-er budget, but shit put SOME effort into the set design. There is nothing to distinguish house 1 from house 2. Compare this to sitcoms from the 90s and 2000s where 90% of the show takes place in 1 spot, and there is so much that makes it distinct. Friends, Big Bang Theory, etc. all have little details in the background that make them distinct. Using Breaking Bad as an example again, you could pull up any scene from Breaking Bad (I've only seen this show once mind you) and I could probably tell you with a level of certainty where the scene is taking place from the White residence to Tuco's HQ to the dealership Skylar works at. Mind you I've seen this show only once.

It's almost like these shows rent out AirBnBs for their sets instead of curating a set themselves.

Movies can also be somewhat off-putting to watch as well. The plots are again superficial and merely become a vector for one gag to the next. Nostalgia bait is prevalent. And don't even get me started on the CGI in a lot of these movies. It's like every movie set their bar at being the direct-to-DVD movie.

Watching Marvel movies especially can be off-putting watching them in theaters because there's periods of silence you know were written for when the crowd in the theater loses their collective shit. It's almost like watching Friends without the laugh track.

I just come to terms with a lot of media made by big companies isn't for me anymore. I get a lot more mileage from older works or even Indie productions. I love the Amazing Digital Circus, there's so much detail and blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments. I'm actually really excited to see Iron Lung next week.

Anyway, that's my rant for the day. Thanks for reading this far!

as of writing this...

Just chilling at my work desk, bored as all hell. Slept pretty decent last night and had a great time at my game night. It kinda sucks sometimes because I think that there will come a point where those game nights won't happen anymore, and it kinda bums me out, so I do my best to enjoy them. I think since getting that buckwheat pillow my sleep has gotten a lot better. I'm finally not waking up completely exhausted still. I don't really know what the rest of today will hold, but I hope it'll be good.
